Ferrets & hot weather

Q - Should I be concerned about my ferret during the summer?

A - Ferrets do not do well in heat. They are most comfortable between 60-70 degrees. Ferrets can have a heat stroke within minutes when it is above 80 degrees.
We have started adding frozen 20 oz bottles in the cages to help the fur kids stay comfortable. We cover the bottles with socks to absorb the condensation - it helps to keep the kids bedding from getting soaked.
I highly recommend you have some frozen bottles on hand so if the electricity goes out you will be able to keep the fur kids cool until it comes back on. The 20 oz bottle will stay cold for about 8 to 10 hours. For lager cages or play areas frozen 2 liter bottles can be used as well.
